Esprit Péniche
Boat stays in Nantes
Presentation
Esprit Péniche moors in the very heart of Nantes, on water that makes almost no noise once night falls. You go down a small gangway, push open a low door, and already the city seems to recede by several kilometers even though it is just a stone’s throw away.
Inside, the space reveals itself as a single, continuous whole: a living room that flows into the bedroom without any clear partition, and a terrace that extends everything toward the water. You can feel the work of a renovation carried out by someone who has known life on the water for a long time. The owner, based very nearby, spent more than fifteen years aboard before restoring this boat plank by plank. It shows in the finishes, in the way every nook has been designed so that nothing is wasted.
This open layout has its downside: coming as four people means accepting to share the space with little separation between the rooms. A couple or a family that knows each other well will feel at home right away; a group of friends just discovering their closeness will probably appreciate the experience a little less.
Beneath the ceiling, it’s worth remembering that you are on a boat, not in a loft. The ceiling drops in places to 1.83 meters, and taller guests quickly learn where to duck without thinking about it. That is the price to pay for sleeping on the water rather than above it.
The bed is made on arrival, towels are provided too, and a flat-screen TV stands in the living room for evenings when you prefer to stay aboard. Outside, the terrace lets you enjoy the air without leaving the boat, in a neighborhood that remains quiet despite its central location.
If you head out for a walk, Le Lieu Unique is only a few minutes away, as are the Château des ducs de Bretagne and the Jardin des Plantes. Shops, bars, a hammam, and a swimming pool are immediately nearby. You never get the feeling of having left the city by sleeping on the water.
In the evening, it is better to give up the idea of partying on board: the neighboring boats are close, and the calm that reigns here is precisely part of the place’s charm.
In the morning, you can go out to have your coffee on deck before the quays have fully woken up, barefoot on the wood still damp with dew.
