The D'Ô is moored on Quai Henri-Barbusse, on the Erdre, a short distance from Saint-Mihiel Bridge and the heart of Nantes. This former 1930s riverboat cruised the Seine for a long time before finding its permanent home here, transformed into a unique floating room by painter Karina Bisch.

The barge is easy to spot from afar. Its roof forms a patchwork of colors and geometric shapes, as if a painting had slipped off the easel to spread across the hull. The large bay windows echo the motif, blending abstract lines and plant silhouettes, and, as you approach, hint at the view you will have from inside over the city and the river.

The path along the riverbank to reach the gangway keeps a somewhat wild feel, tall grass and cobwebs included. Nothing unmanageable, but we warn from the outset anyone who dislikes that kind of encounter, or who is traveling with large luggage: access is that of a real boat, not that of a standard hotel entrance.

On board, everything is contained in a single room designed like a sailor's cabinet. Simply open the shutters to reveal the equipped kitchen, the large table, and the double bed, all of which had been tucked away until then. The curtains and blinds, also dressed by Karina Bisch, filter the daylight and close off the space once night falls.

At the back, the bathroom surprises with its walk-in shower with colored plexiglass walls. The same vocabulary of shapes as on the roof is found there, as if the decor had continued its path into the smallest corners.

Morning often begins with the mist lingering over the Erdre, and sometimes with a few mallards coming to inspect the boat's surroundings. Coffee, tea, and hot chocolate for breakfast are included, to be prepared yourself in the kitchenette, between glances through the bay window.

There is no washing machine on board: for a stay of several nights, you will need to use a dry-cleaning service rather than rely on an on-site machine. A detail to anticipate, especially if you plan to linger.

During the day, the City of the Dukes of Brittany can be explored on foot by crossing the paved quays, while the gardens of Île de Versailles and their Japanese-inspired promenade offer a breath of fresh air by the water. The Fine Arts Museum is a five-minute walk away.

In the evening, the light changes on the river, reflections lengthen, and the barge regains a calm that the nearby city center does not have.

A tip: turn on the heating as soon as you arrive if you are visiting out of season, as it responds quickly, and take the opportunity to settle onto the outdoor terrace before night falls over the Erdre.
