The Cœur de Loire Hotel occupies a 1930s house in the Hauts-Pavés-Saint-Félix district of Nantes, a part of the city where residential streets almost feel like a village, with gardens spilling out onto the pavements. You push open a gate, walk a few metres through the calm, and already the city noise seems to stay outside.

Inside, the house has kept something of a family feel. A lounge doubles as a library and reading corner, with a few board games placed on a coffee table for evenings when you stay in. People also work there, laptop open near the window, while another guest leafs through a book in the armchair beside them.

The garden, meanwhile, deserves to be lingered over. Designed in an English style, planted and flowered according to the seasons, it extends onto a terrace where a few deckchairs await the late afternoon. People have coffee there in the morning, return in the evening with a drink, and in between, the birds make the most of the place undisturbed.

The fifteen rooms are spread over three floors served only by stairs, as the house was not built with a lift. Something to keep in mind for heavy luggage or tired legs. In return, each room has gained in character: double glazing, contemporary colours, views of the quiet street or the garden depending on the floor. A ground-floor room remains accessible to guests with reduced mobility.

Breakfast is served in the veranda, facing the garden, as a buffet featuring mainly artisanal and seasonal products. During the week, it is served from 7:00 to 9:30. At weekends, the house is happy to let guests sleep a little longer, until 10:00.

As for parking, the hotel does not have private parking. You will need to make do with the street spaces in the neighbourhood, as most of the neighbours do. A detail that is easy to forget given how quiet the area is, halfway between the university campuses and Nantes’s historic city centre, a few streets from the Talensac market and the Bellamy district.

Recently taken over by owners from the tourism sector, the property has kept that homely atmosphere where people come together, among travellers passing through for work and couples coming to unwind for a weekend.

At the end of the day, if the weather allows, it is best to head to the garden before the light fades. It is the only time when you can enjoy the silence without anyone to share it with.
