Exiting through the north exit of Nantes station, the Oldegar appears almost immediately, on the other side of Rue de Richebourg. The former Astoria hotel is still recognizable in the building’s lines, but the interior has changed completely after a renovation carried out in 2025. The tone is set from the entrance: second-hand furniture, raw materials, colors drawing as much from the 1970s as from contemporary pop.

On the ground floor, the bar takes up a large part of the space. It opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 11 p.m., leaving time to watch several types of clientele pass through in a single day: travelers gulping down a coffee before their train, locals stopping by on their way home from work, groups lingering a little later in the evening. Right next door, the music lounge displays its collection of second-hand vinyl records, counted in the thousands, to browse on site or take away. For concerts and parties, it’s mainly on Instagram that you keep up with what’s happening, week by week.

Going up to the upper floors, the 45 rooms are divided between two orientations: some overlook Rue de Richebourg, fairly quiet for a station district, while others face an inner terrace. The furniture has been locally recovered or restored, each piece with its own history and signs of use. The mattresses come from a refurbishment chain, Tediber, and some of the linens and decorative items come through Selency. Three apartments, designed like train compartments, can accommodate families or groups traveling together. The only caveat to know before booking in summer: no room has air conditioning, but the windows facing the quiet street or the inner terrace make it easy to air out once night falls.

Breakfast is served between 6:30 and 9:30 a.m. on weekdays, a little later on weekends, until 10 a.m., for an extra charge that is justified by the menu: coffee roasted in Nantes, organic apple juice, artisanal cheeses—the offering stays local without making a selling point of it. For a meal later in the day, the on-site options are limited to Jimmy’s Pizza corner, which gives you a good reason to head a little farther toward the tables in the historic center.

Outside, the Richebourg-Saint-Clément district is best explored on foot. The Fine Arts Museum and the Jardin des Plantes are a few minutes away, and the historic center is a little farther on. The Cité internationale des congrès is not far either, which explains the presence of a meeting room for around ten people. The hotel carries the Accueil Vélo label, with a cleaning area provided for two-wheelers, and the Line 1 tram stop as well as the airport shuttle stop are just steps away.

Reception remains open 24 hours a day, a secure luggage room lets you leave your belongings before a late train, and an elevator serves all floors. A private paid garage provides direct access to this elevator for those arriving by car. Small pets are accepted for an additional fee.

One last point for early risers: since reception stays open all night, you can pick up your keys well before breakfast service starts and go have a coffee at the bar from 7 a.m. onward, just in time to catch an early train.
