Crébillon Street, just a stone’s throw from Place Graslin and its neoclassical theatre, Oceania Hôtel de France occupies an 18th-century townhouse identified by its understated façade and carriage gate. You push open the door, and the lobby opens onto a stone staircase that still retains something of its era. The colors, however, belong to our own: bold contrasts, contemporary furniture set against the old volumes.

As you head up to the upper floors, the rooms each tell a different story. Some feature taupe and duck blue, others pinkish orange. The sizes vary too, from 17 square meters for the Comfort rooms to the Prestige suite with its private terrace, perched above the rooftops of Nantes. Walk-in shower, Nespresso machine, safe: the practical extras are thoughtfully provided, without going overboard.

On the ground floor, the bar changes mood. Zebra patterns, dim lighting, a cocktail menu served from morning until 11 p.m. You’ll meet hotel guests there, but also regulars from the neighborhood coming in for a drink after work.

Breakfast is served in the dining room as a buffet, with Paysan Breton butter and pot-cooked jams among the essentials. For relaxation, you’ll need to head out: the hotel doesn’t have a pool within its walls, but it does arrange access to Aquatonic, just a few minutes’ walk away, for those who want to follow a hammam and jacuzzi session after a day of walking through the center.

For a late dinner, room service is available between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., with jarred dishes prepared by a craftsman from Picardy. There isn’t really a restaurant on site, but the option remains convenient for those returning from the Graslin Theatre, right across the street, without feeling like going back out.

If you’re arriving by car, it’s better to know in advance: there is no private parking attached to the hotel, only a public car park nearby. Something to sort out before departure rather than once the bags are on the pavement on Crébillon Street.

One last point for early risers: ask for a courtyard-facing room if you’re a light sleeper, as Place Graslin comes alive as soon as the market opens.
