The Billie Hotel occupies a building in Nantes’s Graslin district, between Place Royale and the columned theater that gives the corner its name. It is often reached on foot, walking down Rue Scribe, without realizing you are changing era as you push open the door.

The lobby opens onto warm tones, velvet, and brass catching the light. You’ll see guests settled in with a laptop and a coffee beside them, others waiting before check-in time, set at 3 p.m., tea in hand. This same space also serves as the breakfast room. The buffet, served from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for an additional charge, keeps things simple and well done: breads, cheeses, cold cuts, eggs, and sometimes crêpes depending on the day. Nothing extraordinary, but everything is fresh.

Five floors, forty-nine rooms. You go up by a staircase that echoes the decor’s codes: geometric patterns, deep tones, classical symmetry. The rooms come in three categories, Cosy, Comfort, and Triple, all air-conditioned, non-smoking, with a kettle and tea and coffee available. The Cosy rooms remain quintessential city-center rooms: between 12 and 17 m², they focus more on atmosphere than space, and you quickly close your suitcase so it doesn’t clutter the room. Those who like to spread their things everywhere will probably prefer a Comfort or a Triple.

On the second floor, room 435 is worth a look. Designed by Japanese artist Makiko Furuichi, it unfolds a black-and-white jungle on the walls, with touches of pink and orange. Japanese folklore even makes its way into the moldings: Baku, the creature that devours nightmares, watches over the room’s nights. You can request it at reception, subject to availability.

In the evening, the bar picks up the thread of the ground floor’s Roaring Twenties atmosphere, with black and gold woodwork and oak flooring. By day, the place is calm, almost silent, ideal for finishing a file settled into a corner of the sofa. As for dining, Billie does not have a restaurant: after breakfast, room service, available 24 hours a day, takes over, or you can head into the neighborhood, which has no shortage of places just steps away, between Passage Pommeraye and Place Graslin.

Two rooms are adapted for guests with reduced mobility, the elevator serves all five floors, and a luggage room and concierge service complete the offering. Reception, open day and night, also handles last-minute requests: room changes in case of street noise, extra linens, laundry service.

One last tip for early arrivals: the lobby opens well before official breakfast time, and coffee or tea is served there continuously. Enough to wait before a stroll to the Graslin Theater, two minutes away on foot.
