Mercure Nantes Centre Grand Hotel
Hotel 4-star in Nantes
Presentation
The Mercure Nantes Centre - Grand Hôtel occupies a classical-style building, just a few steps from Place Royale, in this Triangle d'Or district where nineteenth-century facades still frame the pedestrian streets. You open the door and the lobby opens onto a ceiling height that comes as a surprise. A piano sits in one corner, almost discreetly. Light glides over the columns and the original moldings.
On the ground floor, the 4.44 bar is announced by the smell of burning wood. The fireplace is lit all evening between November and March. People settle in there for a cocktail, a snack, a glass of wine before heading back up. Some evenings, a pianist plays and the conversations quiet down.
As you go up the floors, the corridors stretch out, a little long when your room is at the end. The one hundred and sixty-two rooms are divided into six categories, from the classic double bed to the Prestige Suite and its fifty-five square meters, complete with jacuzzi and walk-in shower. In the Privilege rooms, a Nespresso machine waits on the desk, next to a phone docking station. The colors change from room to room, deep blue, mustard yellow, sometimes a red that warms the whole space. The bathrooms, for their part, keep the original proportions of the building, more compact than the room itself. They remain well equipped, with hairdryer and toiletries included, but it is better to know this if you are traveling as a couple with a lot of luggage.
From the morning onward, the breakfast room fills up quickly. The buffet is generous, hot pastries, sometimes smoked salmon, crêpes made to order.
The private covered parking remains a major advantage in the city center, where finding a space often feels like a game of patience. Access requires a bit of attention: the pedestrian streets around the hotel are not obvious at first glance, and the GPS tends to lose cars in the area. The staff provides a code and precise directions before arrival, which avoids many unnecessary detours.
On leaving, the green line drawn on the ground starts directly from the hotel sidewalk. It leads to the Passage Pommeraye in a few minutes, then to the Château des Ducs de Bretagne, the Musée d'Arts, and on to Les Machines de l'Île along the Loire. The SNCF train station can be reached by tram in five minutes, and the airport by shuttle a little later.
In the basement, a fitness room remains open for anyone who wants to run before having coffee. The meeting rooms, about a dozen spread over several levels, host everything from an executive committee meeting to an Easywork space for two or three people coming to work between appointments in the city.
One final tip: ask for a courtyard-facing room rather than a street-facing one if you plan to sleep in late on the weekend. The brightly painted windows overlook complete calm, far from the activity of the pedestrian street in the evening.
Summary of a few positive reviews read on the Web
- We came by car and had trouble spotting the parking entrance, tucked away in a pedestrian street. Once there, the staff had provided a code and clear directions by phone before arrival.
- Room overlooking the inner courtyard, with brightly painted windows. Surprising at first glance, but completely silent at night, even on a Friday.
- Check-in was done well before the scheduled time with no problem, and the receptionist offered for us to wait in the lobby while the room was being prepared. Julie at reception took the time to give real advice for the evening.
- Breakfast buffet well above average, with local products and crêpes made on site. Service stays organized even when the room fills up around 8:30.
- Bathroom smaller than expected compared with the size of the room, but well equipped, with hairdryer and toiletries included. Nothing bothersome for two nights.
- Ten minutes on foot from the Château des Ducs de Bretagne and a stone's throw from the Passage Pommeraye. The tram is two hundred meters away, convenient for reaching the station quickly.
